Comic Book

Comic Book

Comic books have carried a negative stigma for as long as they have existed.  Viewed as juvenile, cheap or inferior forms of literature and art, comic books have had an uphill battle from day one.  But with the success of comic books as represented in Hollywood, maybe, just maybe the perception of them will change.

The truth is, however, that in some circles comic books will always represent what’s wrong with the world, like many other forms of entertainment.  Video games and television have been put under a similar assault by parent groups, religious groups and highbrow elitists that just don’t get their appeal and blame them for the moral downslide of society.  Music over the past few decades has suffered the same kind of negative backlash.

The beautiful thing about comic books, though, is what sets them apart from all other forms of art.  And that thing is the marriage of art and writing that come together in a symphony of story unparalleled.  Much like the film and television industries possess the unique coupling of stories, and sometimes graphic art, with live action, or moving pictures, comic books are unique in the way they present a story.

For instance, take the art in comic books.  Any artist worth his salt can illustrate a still portrait or landscape scene, or what have you. Similarly, any abstract artist with any merit can illustrate a still masterpiece of odd attraction and sensibility.  But it takes a special kind of skill to use those same artistic abilities and techniques to transform a writer’s words to sequential story-telling, depicting constant movement and a wide range of emotions panel after panel, page after page.  Likewise, it’s a chore for a writer to structure their words in such a way that allows the art to do the descriptive ‘talking’ and fill in the dialogue in the appropriate places while still maintaining an interesting and flowing story.  And this is what comic books are made of.

Look at an artist like David Mack who pushes the medium of comic books into another level with his use of paints and materials to create abstract beauty while still maintaining the comic form.  Or the many acclaimed novelists, like Orson Scott Card and Stephen King, for example, who have made the transition to comics bringing their same talents and skill to the mixed media art form.  Yet comic books continue to be disrespected, or looked at as substandard as compared to other media.

That perception may never change, but whether comic books continue to thrive and grow, or eventually fade away, there will never be another art form that quite does what comic books are able to do.

Old Comics

Everyone at one time or another had those old comic books lying around. Either from childhood, or they belonged to your parents or even grandparents. Or perhaps they were given to you from someone close who wanted to get rid of theirs. Most of the time they’re not worth much, just nice to have around for nostalgia’s sake. Other times you can find a real gem that you could keep and hold dear, or sell that puppy on Ebay or to a local retailer.

Regardless of where they came from or what one intends to do with them, those old comic books bring back a lot of memories and can be hard to let go of. But sometimes it’s necessary to do just that, either to lessen the clutter in your home, to make some quick cash, or to make room for more new ones! It’s still hard to let go of all those memories and cool stories you enjoyed so many years ago, but it can be worth it.

How do you know if they’re worth anything though? Well, if you’re not a regular comic reader, it’s a common misconception that they’re all worth at least as much as their cover price, and if they’re old they must be worth more. Sadly, that is almost never the case. Like anything else, comics depreciate with age, and with every tiny little crease they may have. They also lose value if the characters represented are no longer popular, or if the comics aren’t old enough. In fact, anything 1970s and up is probably not going to be worth a lot unless it’s a hot storyline, by a top creator, or features a first appearance by a very popular character.

One way you can find out if your old comic books are worth anything is to have them graded by the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) which grades comics and places them in a plastic protective covering to further preserve them. They also give a seal and a document of authenticity and of course a rating. Graded comics generally sell for considerably larger amounts than the same comic in mint condition that is not graded. But grading comes at a price. For each comic you grade it cost you anywhere from $20 to $80 depending. While it will sell for more, it may still be hard to find a buyer, and you’re cutting your profit by the cost of the grading.

Ebay is a great way of getting rid of old comic books as well. Everyone uses Ebay these days, and you can set reserve prices, or open it all the way up. You can sell single issues or collections. And you can describe your items in intricate detail for the potential buyers. Tons of comics are sold on Ebay every day.

You could also just give them away to Salvation Army, the local library, or some kid down the street if you wish. They’re your comics, so do what you want with them. If you want to keep your old comic books around, but you want to protect them, go purchase some bags and boards from your local or favorite online comic shop and throw them in a box for storage. It’s your call.

Peanuts Comic

Peanuts Comic

That is happiness; to be dissolved into something completely great.” – Willa Cather (American novelist)

There is a certain something that everyone wants, consciously or unconsciously. Every soul has an ultimate goal, whether the soul knows it or not. Yet, this goal does not get the kind of importance it deserves. Few understand it, even fewer know how to go about getting it – happiness.

When people are asked what happiness means to them, they hum and haw a while before responding with something like money, a bigger house, a sexy wife, an influential husband, the latest sports car, more parties, more drinking…. These things seem to define happiness to the average person.

In the pursuit of happiness, people race – against time, against the Jones, against life itself. Does happiness really mean partying all night, every night and blowing up pots of money on designer clothing?

Ancient tantra states that happiness is a state of mind – that you can be happy no matter what your situation in life is – if you choose to be happy. Happiness does not come to you – you can call upon it whenever you choose to. You have to make it happen. Those who believe otherwise have allowed society, peer pressure or their own misgivings to delude them.

Happiness has nothing to do with what you own, which religion you follow or which community or country you are from – or, for that matter, with whether you believe in God or not. You are responsible for your actions and you choose to be anything you want.

As Charles Schulz, the creator of the popular Peanuts comic strip, said, “My life has no purpose, no direction, no aim, no meaning, and yet I’m happy. I can’t figure it out. What am I doing right?”

Being happy is a continuous process. It does not stay with you if you do not maintain it, but you need not run after more money, parties or sex to get it. True, the scriptures of ancient tantra reveal that sexual pleasure is the highest form of pleasure that can be achieved in the tangible, material world that we know of today. It is the last bastion of happiness for the earthly body.

Nevertheless, continuous sex without the right kind of awareness and expertise will severely damage one’s psyche… maybe even to the extent of lunacy. The mind is far more expansive than the body; while the mind hungers for more, the body cannot keep up.

Tantric sex demands that the mind have the right level of consciousness. Unfortunately, today everyone has lost sight of that fact. Most have mistakenly identified frequent sex with happiness, whether it is meaningful or not. Society has become more permissive, and sex has become e a commodity without value. Today, sex is an empty promise.

Attraction is an inescapable fact of life. A beautiful flower, a beautiful landscape, a beautiful sunset, a beautiful man or woman – each evokes attraction. When we chart this attraction to its essential core, we are pursuing real happiness.

Tantra and Happiness

The person you feel passionate for must also reciprocate those feelings. If you already have that special someone, that relationship must grow in a positive direction.

We all want such feelings to be mutual. If you like a flower, you want to take it home. If you like a sunset, you want to capture it on film. If you love a person, you want to be with that person all the time. Ancient tantra has always advocated balance and harmony. When two people get together too, there should also be a balance.

It is a lie that the more sex and sexual partners you have, the more your awareness grows. If this theory were true, prostitutes and gigolos would be far more aware and far happier than the rest of us put together. For them, sex is work, and there can be no true pleasure in the act when it is carried out in the name of work. Awareness cannot be brought about by having meaningless sex. Tantra states that only when two people have compatible levels of consciousness can they dance their way to higher levels through sex.

Tantra advocates the concept of gender in terms of consciousness – the masculine consciousness and the feminine consciousness. In the case of a couple with alternative sexuality, one partner will always have a slightly more masculine consciousness while the other has a more feminine one, regardless of their gender. One balances the other, and when the two come together in harmony, there can be nothing more fulfilling.

To achieve happiness, one must delve into the divine, mystical secrets that the art of Tantra has given to us. In this quest, we must understand our Chakras – those apparently inexplicable centres in our bodies that can heal and empower us. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that actually means ‘energy wheel’, and Tantra has deciphered these esoteric centres of the human body for us to understand.

Every human being has been gifted with Seven Chakras:

  • Muladhara (the Root Chakra)
  • Swadishtana (Hara Chakra)
  • Manipura (Solar Plexus)
  • Anahata (Heart Chakra)
  • Vishuddha (Throat Chakra)
  • Agnya (Third Eye Chakra), and
  • Sahasara (Crown Chakra)

Each of these ‘energy chakras’ plays a specific part in our development, and must be activated one by one using special techniques and processes of Tantra. Else, we cannot ascend to the highest level of complete consciousness. When activated, the chakras enable us to become fearless, even in the face of adversity. Inner strength and stability result.

Most of these superheroes have not only been depicted in the comic books but have since moved on to TV shows as well as the big screen.

Superheroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Giant Man, Black Panther and the other Avengers have given positive messages to how we can save our planet as well as how we can grow up being patriotic to our country. Other superheroes that from marvel such as the X-Men have shown us how hard it is to grow up when you are different and have shown us how indifference is a bad thing and that people are scared of what is different from them. Basically most of marvel superhero comic books and cartoons have messages and are just plain fun to read.

Several Marvel Superheroes have gone on to become big merchandise for the company such as the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, Blade, Daredevil and not forgetting Electra. Comic Superheroes

Books, magazines, and music are categorized according to their genre. There are different types of music such as rock and roll, country, classical, and jazz. Books are categorized as fiction, non-fiction, drama, romance, and horror. Comics are no different than books, magazines, and music on how they are categorized. There are different types of comics ranging from superhero to science fiction. The most popular type of comic book genre is superhero. What about each comic makes it a certain genre? There are different elements and characteristics that determine the type of comic.

Superhero comic books are easy to categorize and are the most well known. A superhero has to be the main character for it to fall under this genre. Superheroes are fictional characters that have superhuman strength and special abilities that are almost like a sixth sense for them. The life of a superhero and most comic stories are about them saving the world and keeping humans safe in their cities. Well known superhero comics are Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. Comics about everyday people without special powers or abilities that fight crime and keep people safe fall under the action genre. These comics are generally about police officers; real life superheroes. The themes and story plots between these two genres are similar, but the main difference is the distinction between a human and a fictional character with superhuman strength.

Another popular genre of comics that can be easy to categorize is science fiction. To be in this genre the comics must represent a theme about science or advanced technology such as time travel or flying cars. It is common for these comics to also take place in outer space. The stories often take place in the future and show what life would be like if we currently had use of the advanced technologies that the comics tell about. A well known science fiction comic that was also a movie is Star Trek.

For a comic to be in the horror genre they have to include anything and everything scary like zombies, vampires, monsters, and villains. These comics are usually dark and have gory pictures, like most horror movies. There is a lot of drama and suspense in this genre. Sometimes it can be confused with fantasy because vampires and zombies aren’t real. However, fantasy comics have a medieval type them with dragons, sword fights, and faraway lands. Both types have made up characters but horror is meant to scare you while you are reading it.

What genre of comic books do you enjoy reading?

In which comic are anti-superheroes the main characters?

Actually I am a bit confused. Some years ago I’ve read a comic that really got my attention, but I couldnt get hold of it, only the first issue.
I think it had supervillains in it and maybe parallel worlds. It might be Wanted but I’m not sure, I’ll have to look into it. Any other suggestions in the supervillain genre?

What do you mean by anti-superheroes? Supervillains? Anti-Heroes (guys like the Punisher who fight bad guys by killing them?)

“anti-superheroes” makes me think of Garth Ennis’s The Boys, which is about a team of government ops who take out superheroes who start to abuse their power

What’s the type of font used in manga (japanese comic books)?

Well, it is a little simplistic to denominate it a “font” considering that they use three type of characters: Katakana, hiragana and kanji. It can not be used as the other fonts in windows, because you need an “ima” program that allows you to type the sound of the word and let the computer to guess which is the symbol you want to use.
Hiragana is a system of sylabics used to write japan native words.
Katakana is another system of sylabics used to write non-japanese native words.
Kanjis are the same characters used by the chinese language. The symbols are the same but the sounds are different.

Daily Comic

Rich and just basically brimming with culture and history, New York CIty actually has a million or more stories to tell about its decadent past and how things around this cosmopolitan city all came to be. Considered to be as one of the United States’ biggest newspapers, whose circulation is actually well more over 700,000 copies.

The New York Daily News, a newspaper printed using a tabloid format has actually started its newspaper journey way back in the year 1919. Mortimer Zuckerman was actually the founder of the New York Daily News while also having the catch phrase, “New York’s Picture Newspaper” (which has over the years, was changed to “New York’s Hometown Newspaper”). Still, in spite of the various changes, the New York Daily News has continued on printing their tabloid format newspaper still with a lot of photographs. Of course, the whole point of being a newspaper just simply means that the New York Daily News also contains lots of news (obviously, it’s not called New York Daily NEWS for nothing).

Gossip about celebrities and other famous people also abound in the New York Daily News Page 6 columns, it is where people often turn to just to read about the hottest, freshest and juiciest gossips about the who’s-who in the industry. As like with other newspapers, the New York Daily News also contain a classified ads section, a popular comics section as well as an equally well-read sports section and an opinion section. New York Daily News really packs in the punch with its varied features and scopes of interest. Here’s a fun fact about the New York Daily News: Bill Gallo is actually the much celebrated sports cartoonist of the New York Daily News.

The New York Daily News was actually founded by Joseph Medill Patterson who’s family were actually the publishers of The Chicago Tribune, the New York Daily News has also been able to establish WPIX-TV and WPIX-FM. During the whole history of the New York Daily News, there was actually a time, during the early part of the 1990s that the New York Daily News almost went to bankruptcy. Fortunately for the New York Daily News however, was the financial assistance that was brought about by Robert Maxwell, a millionaire who offered to help the New York Daily News stay in the media business. However, due to Robert Maxwell’s death, his company didn’t any more felt the need to continue on publishing the New York Daily News. When it comes to their opinions section however, the New York Daily News try to set its self apart from its various competitors. The well-respected New York Times have actually set very liberal standards for their newspaper’s opinions column, while fellow tabloid, the New York Post differs from the New York Daily News’ opinions pages by being a staunch rightist.

However, the New York Daily News has actually been able to acquire ten Pulitzer prizes since it was first established but due to its fierce competition with fellow tabloid, the New York Post, the New York Daily News has actually resorted to some sensationalism as a counter-tactic against the New York Post wherein the New York Daily News has been touted as the newspaper with the most creative headlines and captions for its photos in all of journalism.
